About CrumbCost
A focused costing and quoting tool for one kind of business: independent home bakers who sell cookies, cakes, and cupcakes.
Why home bakers
Home bakers usually price from memory or a quick guess, while ingredient prices move every few weeks. A spreadsheet can work, but it is easy to break a formula, mix up grams and kilograms, or forget the packaging and your own time. CrumbCost does one job: turn the prices you actually pay into a trustworthy cost per item, so a quote is a decision rather than a hope.
It deliberately does not try to be inventory software, a point-of-sale system, or an accounting package.
What it calculates
- Usable package quantity = package quantity (in g, ml, or pieces) × usable yield % ÷ 100.
- Ingredient line cost = package price × recipe quantity ÷ usable package quantity.
- Labor cost = labor minutes ÷ 60 × hourly rate.
- Batch cost = ingredient costs + labor + packaging per batch + other costs per batch.
- Cost per item = batch cost ÷ sellable items per batch.
- Suggested price = cost per item ÷ (1 − target margin ÷ 100), rounded up to the next paisa or cent.
- Margin after entered costs = (revenue − batch cost) ÷ revenue × 100. It is “Not defined” when revenue is zero.
All arithmetic uses exact decimal maths rather than floating-point numbers, and full precision is kept until a value is displayed.
Limits you should know
- Units: g, kg, oz, lb (weight), ml, L (volume), and piece (count). Cups, spoons, fluid ounces, and weight–volume conversions are not supported, because they would need density guesses. Weigh ingredients or use ml.
- Currency: one currency per workspace (INR, USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, or CAD). No conversion between currencies.
- No tax engine: no GST, VAT, or sales-tax handling. Quotes are not invoices.
- Not net profit: “margin after entered costs” only includes the costs you entered. Rent, utilities you didn't enter, delivery, platform or card fees, and taxes can reduce what you actually earn.
- Not advice: a target margin is your choice. The sample numbers in the demo are illustrations, not industry averages.
- Market prices: CrumbCost doesn't watch market prices or send alerts. It shows when you last updated each ingredient.
- One device: data lives in one browser. There is no sync or cloud backup; use the JSON backup to move data.
Who makes it
CrumbCost is an independent software project. It has no investors, customers, or company history to report, and it makes no claims about either. If support contact details have been configured, they're on the contact page.
